No Receiver, No Servo's, No Battery - just Free Flight...

This is the free flight hanger, unfortunately this is probably the area where Bumpy Green Model Aerodrome has least experience, but we want this to feature as much as the other area's of the site. We have be talking to many people who have a keen interest in this subject. What we would really like is someone to take on a regular column about free flight so if you are interested in doing this, please email us.

So What is Free Flight....

Well im probably not the berst person to define what free flight is but i will have a go. For sure it is probably the most fundemental area is aeromodelling. It basically involves launching a model into to the air which is not under the control of us the flyer, the model is trimmed to fly without the use of radio control. The model should fly in a larger circle gaining height under power (and i will explain the various ways to power these models below) and when the power stops the model should continue its circular flying gliding down to a gentle contact with the ground. These models tend to be so light that they will survive any moderate contact with the ground.

How Are They Powered....

There are many ways to power a free flight model :-

A rubber band running the length of the inside of the fusalage, fixed at the rear and attached to a propeller at the front. The rubber is wound by winding the propeller backwards until a sufficiant number of turrns are applied, enough to propel the model for several seconds.

An engine running of either diesel and ether, petrol and oil or glow fuel.

A jetex or similar rocket motor as in the Small Bell X1 rocket.

CO2 Gas, a sodar stream bottle is used to pressurise a tank i the model and this powers a motor.

Electric motor, both Ducted Fan, Tractor/Pusher.

Pump up ompressed air.

More models to be added soon.....

How is Bumpy Green Model Aerodrome getting involved in Free Flight

I, Chody in my thirst for knowledge and experience have decided to investigate Free Flight, so where better to start than by talking to our good friends and Bumpy Green, Alex Imrie and Ron. I went to Alex's house to meet and talk about Free Flight and to choose a model to build. I sampled some of the best tea to be found in the land and learned a great deal about the subject.

The model i have decided to build and fly is the Clevelands "Viking". Follow my adventures over the next few months and find out how i got on building and Flying my first free flight model.

Coming Soon to Regulars...
