Welcome to Chins Chins, my chance to chin-wag.
Each month I will be looking at something new in the modelling industry, some history from the same month a quarter of a century ago and current Bumpygreen projects I am involved in.

Last Months Project...

The Ripmax Alienator with it's futuristic looks, aerobatic ability and supposedly un-stallable wing configuration should make an interesting addition to the Bumpy Green Model Aerodrome electric fleet.
Powered by an Overlander Typhoon 625 race motor coupled to a 50Amp speed controller and 10 cell 1700CP flight pack it's going to be fun test flying.

What's Old?
What was going on in September 1976 in the modelling world. Take a look back at some snippets from a magazine of the era.

The Editorial brought news of a drastic price increase to 40p. This was to offset the April postage increase to 22p on a copy of Radio Modeller. This represented 55% of the total cost of the magazine and was compared to the 1966 cost of 2s 6d (12½p) and postage was 2½d (just over 1p) which was 8% of the magazine cost. Other increases of course contributed to the 5p increase but the point about the postage cost as a percentage is quite clear. Also the run up the October 3rd All Electric Fly-In at St Albans MAC saw the announcement of some prize classes with concours & innovation being key slots.

Cover model and featured review kit was the Aerospatiale Alouette II from Kavan. Imported by Irvine engines. Hailed as the long awaited 'small' helicopter kit of the time. Powered by the new schnuerle ported Irvine .40 engine which was cooled by a fan resembling a boat propeller. Using a number of new innovations of the time including the Kavan cyclic pitch control and a novel tail rotor boom and sliding collar control system.

Motor Miscellany with Peter Chinn moves onto part 2 of explaining the mystery of setting up r/c carburettors. This time looking at more variants from OS, Super Tigre, Enya, Kavan & a Fox 2 jet system and covering various air bleed types in use.

With great advances being made into electric powered flight as a way to combat noise John Fletcher designed the 3 channel Hushabye sports plane for just that purpose. 51" span high wing type designed for Cyclone 15 size motor, 600mAh - 1200mAh 9.6v Nicad packs and 3 function radio control.

Winners of the Meon Valley pylon races and the West Mendip Soaring Associations Scale Slope meet grace the pages of the Dave Hughes 'Strictly for Soarers' column. Interestingly in the midst of the drought hit UK there was an increase in Thermal Soaring activity with winds and conditions favouring that over traditional slope soaring venues.

Mick Reeves reports back from the 1976 FAI Scale Model World Championships held at Dalarna Sweden. Mick managed an impressive 6th place overall with his Fournier RF4.
Bob Nelitz of Canada took first place with his D.H. Chipmunk. Brian Taylor was runner up showing his Viltee Valiant.
What's Next?

The guys at Bumpy Green told me I had to get off the Protech User habit I was forming with 3 gliders from that stable. After a number of other models in between I have had a relapse and had to get a Protech fix.
Well not quite. I have had this DC3 Dakota for almost a year now and decided it was time to dust off the box and get cracking. Not sure I like the colour scheme yet ~ we'll have to see what happens.

A plea from your columnist.
I have run afoul of a small problem with my Radio Modeller magazines. It would seem I have come up short for 1977 issues (ie next years column material) I have March, September, October & November.
I need to beg, borrow or steal (well pay for) Jan, Feb, Apr, May, June, July, Aug & December issues.
If anyone can help out with this I'd be very grateful. I would be willing to buy an entire year if I have to but they must include all covers and be reasonable condition.
Please drop me an email if you can help.

That's it for another month,
See you in October.
