Ok a little history first... |
Name: Wayne Haycock
Age: 41
Status: Married to Elaine
Children: 2 Darren and Kerry
Occupation: Production buyer
Home Town: Stafford (Midlands)
Interests: Model flying (all types) motor racing and musicHi,
My name is Wayne Haycock and this is a little something about my modeling history and me, I've been modeling for about 28 years now.It all started at school when a classmate was flying a control line aircraft one summer holiday on the school field and I decided I liked what I saw. I started with a Mercury Models Viper with a DC spitfire in it. I didn't build it very well and it didn't fly very well, but after that I was hooked, then thanks to my mum and dad I got an R/C boat, a Veron Models semi scale target towing launch, this was powered by a Enya 09 and the radio was a Horizon two channel single stick, I followed this with some out and out racing boats a Mini Jag with a OPS 21 in it and a Jaguar with a Webra Speed 40, After racing cars for about 18 months my interests turned to aircraft.

The beginning of a wonderful hobby... |
I started flying with a DB Models Tyro major powered with an OS 25 Max and the radio was OS Cougar, as a back up to this I had a Tyro. This was a small version of the tyro major and that was powered with an OS 15 Max. After that I had a Kamco Kadet with an Enya 35 in it and the aileron wing, also building an Archie bipe and to this day I still have that plane. My dad has built a new one that is now powered by a Saito 45; I then got interested in aerobatics flying a Maricardo with a Webra speed 40 in it and a Bulldog with an HP 61

Displays and competition... |
After some years flying my dad and I would spend most Saturday afternoons over at Birmingham visiting Jim Davis Models and a little model shop called C & M Models, I remember one Saturday I was asked if I would like to join C&M Models as a display pilot.
This I did and I loved every minute (C & M is now Mikes Models as Mike was the 'M' in C & M) From this I went on to take part in aerobatic competitions and then got interested in scale. I drifted from one competition to the other but in the end I stopped all competition flying.
Wots this?...
Pleased as punch as I collect my trophy...Soon after this I got interested in fun fly models and that was next. I competed in some of the comps but I started to get more interested in teaching people to fly.
About two or three years ago I was asked to join a new club that was forming and I joined as first the safety officer then the training officer. With this club I was the first member to take and get a BMFA 'B', I then left this club because of the flying site but in all these years I have been a member of the Chase Radio Controlled Aero Club as I am one of the few founder members left and I hold the post of training officer with them.
Firing up the ol' Super Sixty...
And then on with the training...
My interests are very varied and I have had a go at all the different types of flying. At the moment I am doing a lot of electric flying, I hope to offer you my views of this wonderful hobby of model flying and that you will let me know good or bad what you think of my ramblings. Over the next few months I hope to bring you my view of the world of model flying from past and present and how things have so dramatically changed in recent years. Welcome to Wayne's World…

The new year... |
So here we are at the start of a new year, new year resolutions made and some now broken, you know the sort of thing stop smoking but you decide to do it tomorrow and tomorrow never comes.
But what of the model world, well tradition has it that the winter time is the time to do the building of that new model ready for the brilliant year ahead, but with all this ARTF about (sounds like some infection) you only need a week to get it together, so is the winter building project a thing of the past. What do you think?.
As for me I do my building all through the year, I get in from work have something to eat get changed and then out in the shed, in the summer it gets hot and in the winter I have to have my heater on but all in all it's my space and I think we all need that!
My new Twinjet...
Colin Strauss flies this 129" span electric powered B-29...How big will electric be in 2002 ?, There are two questions here. Size and numbers, I must confess until two years ago electric was what you used to power a glider and that was that. How wrong can you be? I bought a twin star at Sandown two years ago, set it all up and never looked back. Then last year I went mad (it helps some times) and bought a Twin jet, built a bipe from a plan for a speedgear 700 and 12 cells. I also built the Hawk and Tucano that were free plan in RCM&E, built a Nebula 'E' and the Mini Lazer 3D that you can read all about on Bumpy Green.
Beautiful B-29 returns from another test flight of the Bell X-1...
Bell x-1 at launch before the rocket is fired...So going back to the how big in size. Well we all know about the B-29 of 169" and 36lbs flown by Colin Straus. As well as some bigger than normal Lancaster's and others, and I also know of a half size Klemm, Aspach in Germany always has large electric models every year.
What of helicopters, well I have had some in my time, and like everything else they are getting bigger. I can remember when you had a '25' size machine to start with then went straight up to a '60' size machine. Now? Well you start with a '30' size and then go out and buy some up-grade parts and a '46' engine and there you are with a machine that will do it all at half the cost. So maybe things are looking up. Something that should concern us all though is that even though we welcome prices coming down there will probably be a cost elsewhere, Quality may have to suffer. So what would you all prefer cheap or quality?. There has to be a sensible balance.

Foot and mouth... |
Hopefully we will never see foot and mouth again. That put the top hat on a lot of flying for a lot if not all of us last year as well as shows and fly-ins it stopped my club from being able to fly for a while, but we did get back on a lot sooner than others.
AAAAGghhhh....
They're Back !!! :-)It's funny but we go on about sites because of noise but do we do or are we doing anything about it. Or are we making too much of this problem for the sake of it. Feel free to air your views on this.
I, at one time was the only member who in my club went to the trouble of fitting a pipe to one of my engines and then using a rubber mount just to try it out. I still think we, and I mean all of us are not doing all we can to try and get noise down, I know that engine manufactures are doing something to help but not all of them, as sites are lost it would be interesting to see how many are lost though noise. If you agree or disagree with any of my ramblings or have any ideas or thoughts of your own let me know, by e-mail at the following adress.
