Hi all and welcome to my world or the world of model flying as I see it!

Once a modeller, Always a modeller...

I left you last month with the news that I am making a model railway, now I know that BumpyGreen is a model flying site but Wayne’s world is about me and my modelling. I look at Wayne’s world as a diary of my modelling life, my thoughts and opinions. That’s why I’m telling you of what I’m doing - simple but true.

The size of train modelling I have gone for is called “N Gauge” this is because the track is only nine millimetre’s from rail to rail. I know I’m not the only one that has a variety of modelling interests, and that’s because as was once said to me that once you’re a modeller you're always a modeller.

To give you a low down with regards to my interests I have RC boats and cars plus my flying so as you can see I have a variety of interests.

Pen Pals...

I’m in regular contact with a fellow modeller in America, Ron Hunt who like me has a mixed bag of interests so to speak, but he has a greater commitment to it than I do and he has won medals with some of his model ships.

The one that stands out is an R/C tug boat he built from scratch complete with the crew. Sitting down to build a model of the tug below deck’s won Ron a gold medal at Toledo, the biggest model show in the USA.

Ron is also a first class builder of plastic kits not only will he put every detail in to the model but he will change things to make the model just the way he wants. To give you an idea at the moment Ron is building a plastic model of a Model A Ford but he is making it as a custom car, so to this end he has built the chassis, then from another kit he has built a big block Chevy engine with it’s own exhaust system to go into this. At the time of writing he is in the process of making moulds for the wheels he wants to fit so like I say he is very committed to his modelling, Ron would probably say he needs committing to an institute!!

Just to finish off this little piece I also know a chairman of a model flying club that is also into trains but he has a live steam loco that you have to sit behind when you run it.

With that I’ll say no more or should I say “variety is the spice of life”

Back In The Air...

So on with the flying, well at the moment I have a Liftoff XXS that I have just finished and so it is now ready to test fly, this is the very small Liftoff with a wing span of 48 inches and a all up weight of 1lb 2 oz and that’s with 1 oz of lead in the nose.

This I have built as a glider because it is designed as an electric powered glider or as it say’s on the box “a mini hotliner” I know of two other Liftoff XXS’s that have been built just as gliders and they fly very well.

One model that I have test flown is the little Hawker headbutt this you may remember is a 19 inch wingspan glider that has to be launched off a cradle on the back of a powered aircraft something like a Uno Wot or a Limbo Dancer.

Things didn’t go totally to plan. The launch went OK but I had the CG too far back and so it was very sensitive to the controls and this made the flight a interesting event and very short, I landed safely and I was going to but some extra lead in the nose but on re-fitting the Headbutt to the cradle I noticed that one of the nylon loops on the end of the retaining elastic bands had broke and it was not the best weather to try tying knots in fishing line! (read that as very cold)

DIY Part 2...

In the power club we are starting to see what father Christmas had delivered back in December.

Pete of Petes pilots fame came up the other day with a new Flair Lark. This he has fitted a new Irvine 53 up front.

At the time of writing it has not been test flown because of a last minute problem with the servos in the wing. Pete had set it all up and then at the 11th hour found that the wing servos are buzzing. This you would expect if the linkages are binding but they are free and easy to move but Pete decided not to fly it. I don’t know why this happens but then if you read last months Wayne’s World you will know I had a strange problem with a receiver and crystal.

The other new model is an Arresti 40 from hanger 9 owned by Graham Gillingham and is powered by a OS 46 FX this model is one of the newer mini sized aerobatic type.

As you would expect it fly’s in a very convincing manner but then Graham is one of the club instructors. One thing that was talked about was ARTF models not just things like what we like or is available but the way they are improving with things like build quality and covering.

Over and Out...

Well that’s it for this month please let me know if any of you out there have other interests be they in other fields of modelling or something completely different, I hope to bring you news of Petes test flight and the Lift off XXS.

Email me on waynesworld@bumpygreen.co.uk

So until next time keep it up any way you can!

Wayne.

Hi wayne No one loses out by looking from time to time at other branches of modeling because one can allways be on the lookout for bits and pieces which can help in your own preferred branch of the hobby... over the years I have found and addapted quite a few things, plus just looking at plastic models for instance(if it don`t fly I don`t build it)can give you a good idea how your scalemodel should look ect urs the looker
