Hi all and welcome to my world or the world of model flying as I see it!
I hope everything is well with you in your modelling world. As to me in my world everything is just fine. So what have I got for you this month? Well small is the way it’s going this month, I have a lot of information about different small models, a report from Switzerland on indoor flying provided for use by a reader, a interesting idea for the Plouf and a report of how I got on in the club foamy pylon event I told you about last month.
Doing it Indoors...
I have received some information from my good friend Urs Szymanski in Switzerland about a interesting indoor model that is being flown by one of his fellow club members, and a large model show with a lot of indoor flying at a town called Sinsheim in Germany, so lets start with some photos of his club members Hercules.
This model is a foam built Hercules of 23-inch wing span, it was cut on a step 4 cutting machine and was the builders first indoor model. It is powered by 4 direct drive N20 motors, and a 6 cell 270 mah battery pack servos are all 6g micros.
The test flight was made by as Urs puts it “the club’s anything flyer” I take it that he is the one member that will have a go at anything! It sounds like it was a good move because on the test flight it was a right hand full but once it was trimmed out it flew very well, Urs is now trying to get the builder to make one twice size but with the same power set up he believes this would make it a lot better to fly.
SINSHEIM 2003...
The best thing for me to do with this next item is to hand it over to Urs so I will print here exactly what he had to tell me about the Sinsheim show, So over to you Urs.
Every year in the small German town of Sinsheim is held "Fazination Modellbau". This year we, the slow flyers had our own hall due to the completion of hall No:6, that meant a much welcome larger flying surface. So now all the planes were grouped together along with the sellers of modelling items, for Sinsheim is the place for stocking up on those items so dear to our hearts.... Money easy come easier go.
If your interest was in boats, cars, trucks etc. they along with more shops were present in the other halls. Also outside on the local full size glider field was the neuheiten show (new models).

Here you could see the latest models plus a lot of other stuff actually flying - a great idea. The weather was real spring like all through the week .
Inside in hall 6 non stop flying went on continuously except for 15 minutes every 2 hrs when a show was given to the public to give a good cross section of the possibilities of indoor flying. In between this show if your frequency was free you could fly as much as you wanted. There were always several models in the air and what was amazing was that despite a mixture of all types (slow and not so slow) all flying at the same time there were few hits and even these were seen as part of the fun.
About 50 % of the models were the impressive small ultimate, extra, fully acrobatic type, usually with a small brushless they happily did hovering, rolling circles etc. Slow flying sure has come a long way and it shows.
Thanks for that Urs it looks like a good time was had by all, as to the performance from brushless motors and better cells this can only be a good thing for the electric flight side of our hobby.
As a side line to this as you can see if you out there send me something like the above I will use it when I can. So don’t just sit there reading this get and tell me about what you and your club are doing after all - Bumpy Green is for you all to contribute to.

E-Plouf...
One other interesting thing is like a lot of you out there Urs has a copy of the Plouf plan. I have got to be honest and say this little model has become very popular if the number of plans I have sent out is anything to go by but that’s a different thing all together. Now then back to the plans that Urs has for his Plouf, you see he is thinking of building it as a electric model. This I see as being no problem to a man like Urs because I have seen some of the small indoor models he has built, once he has this finished you will be the second to know!
Small Model Association...
Staying with the wonderful world of small models as you can see from the photo I’m still flying my Plouf it still turns heads and gets good comments from those who see it fly.

But the other model you see in the photo is even smaller than the Plouf. It’s called the Hawker Headbutt it’s all of 19 inch wingspan with a total all up weight of 5oz, the radio gear consists of 2 Futaba 3601 servos a jeti Rex 4 receiver and a 110mha battery pack.
As you can see there is no shortage of space for the gear, and as for the cost well I built mine from wood in my scrap box, as to the cost of the gear well this only cost’s a little more than standard gear nowadays but with a model like the Headbutt you get twice the fun.
Here are some photos taken on the slopes of Ian Buckley with his Jamara Cub.

10 out of 10 for spotting that this is a power model and yes we fly gliders on the slopes but Ian was flying it as a glider. Obviously under power it was climbing like a home sick angel but once the power was cut it would glide and stay up very well.
It was nice to see something different like this, in fact with this being on the slopes and me with the plouf and headbutt it was starting to look like a small model association event (I hope you approve Gray!)
Foamy Pylon...
You may remember that last month I said I was going to let you know how I got on in the foamy pylon event held the other weekend.
Well as you can see I did a lot better than I expected coming 2nd and 4th.This was a new event to me so I didn’t know what to expect. For those of you that don’t know how this event is run it runs a little along the lines of a F3F event. Let me explain.

As with F3F you have a course marked out by two sets of poles 100 metres apart, but unlike F3F, four of you stand at one end of the course with a caller and the time keeper because this is man on man racing. At the other end of the course you have a flagman each with a different coloured flag. Before the start each flyer takes it in turn to hold up his model to be identified by one of the flagmen at the other end, once that is done and all pilots are ready you all launch together and have 1 minuet to climb to height you must be off the course before the minute is up, the last ten seconds are counted down and you all come thorough the gate and head up to the other end where your flagman will raise the flag once you have past the poles or gate at that end you then turn and come back and so on with the winner being the first to complete ten laps.
A good day was had by all me in particular because of my 2nd and 4th. As to how I came 2nd and 4th well that was because before the event we had been told by the comp secretary that he was going to run two classes i.e. wing type gliders and conventional shape gliders and I had both so entered both.
Over and Out...
Well that’s it for this month, next month I will tell you about the show at Sandown and I have a new model to show you that fly’s backwards! And we get in a flap with one new model, and just before I go don’t forget to have a look at the new Bumpy Green Model Shop when it goes live next month.
So until next time just remember this “Work like you don’t need the money, love like you’ve never been hurt, and fly like no one is watching”
BUT PLEASE KEEP IT SAFE
