RAF Halton Apprentices Reunion 2001

This article is split into 3 parts, this one which is an introduction, part 2 which is the full size on display at the show and finally part 3 which features all the models flown and shown on the day. You can find the links at the bottom of each part.

Where did we go this time...

Bumpy Green were invited along to RAF Halton by Chesham Model Flying Club who were organising the model flying display at the Tri-Annual Apprentices Reunion at RAF Halton in Buckinghamshire.

What was going on there...

The day began early, with mist still loitering at the edge of the field but the sun soon saw to that and by the time people (both former apprentices & model flyers) began to arrive it was a lovely bright morning. This event held every three years brings together all the people who served their apprenticeships at RAF Halton.

Pictures taken from the air of the aerodrome during Choddy's epic voyage. (more on that later) Along with the models on display there were full size planes outside and in the hangars. One hangar was used for static displays and a gathering point for the apprentices, tea, coffee and lunch were on offer in the second.

As you can see there was a large turnout, and with the wonderful weather it made for an excellent day. Later in the day curry & rice was served in one of tha hangars, the queue had to be seen to be believed.

The marching band put on a grand display and at the end of the day they led a march out of the aerodrome to finish off the event.

What else was there?

A few vintage cars were on display, most notable was this gleaming Rolls Royce Phantom I. This car has had the starring (automotive) roll in a number of movies and television programs. You don't see polished chrome work like that these days.

Flying Displays.

Full size aircraft came and went during the days events. Some historic classics and a few modern single engine planes graced the runway with the highlight of the full size display being put on by a pair of ex-service jets. Royal Canadian Air Force T-33 and an Ex Red Arrows Gnat.

Busy flight line, and no serious mishaps despite the number of models in the air.

Throughout the day Chesham Model Flying Club members and special guests from around the country performed a marvellous series of flying displays with a wide ranging and varied line up of models. From Paul Bakers tiny 27" span Messerschmit Me163 to Gordon Nicholls 18ft span Blackburn Beverley.
